Melchior is the property of Frank Wedekind and, in this incarnation, Steven Sater. I am only borrowing him all in good fun.
* Melchior's age is never explicitly stated in the musical. I'm taking fifteen from his father's comment in "Whispering" that "for fifteen years ... I have followed your lead [in raising Melchior]".
WHO AM I? Name: Melchior Gabor Age: About 15 * Canon: Spring Awakening (the 06-09 Broadway musical version of the plot) -- entering the hotel a few days following the conclusion of canon. Based on Matt Doyle's interpretation of the character. Appearance: Slender. Pale. Dark hair. Dark eyes. His dress is always some degree of the same attire. Usually a white shirt, suspenders, knee-length trousers, knee-high black socks and shoes, and occasionally a jacket. Perhaps occasionally a sweater vest and tie. ![]() Unlike his now former classmates and friends, and in many ways thanks to his mother's laissez-faire method of raising him, Melchior has refused to conform to the ideals that were imposed on him by his school and church. He has "the hunger that a child feels for everything they're shown" and is eager to learn things on his own outside of the highly restricted curriculum his school presented him with and has managed in many ways to do so. However, he has, perhaps, in manys ways suffered from his lack of meaningful relationships with adults as much as many of the other teenagers from his small town -- though he can appear to be wise beyond his years and insists on being treated like an adult, inwardly he is often not so put together and his history proves he cannot always be trusted to make well thought-out decisions. |
WHAT IS THIS WEIRD CANON? Spring Awakening is a Duncan Sheik/Steven Sater musical based on the 1891 tragic play Frühlings Erwachen by Frank Wedekind. Like the original play, it takes place in a conservative German town around 1892 and follows a dozen or so teenagers and how they're affected by the strict morals, high pressures, lack of communication, sexual repression, and even abuse from the adults in their lives. The show gained attention when it moved to Broadway in 2006 and won an array of major theater awards, including Best Musical. The Broadway production closed in January, but there are many productions of the show worldwide in several languages these days, including a North American tour. (warning: language) |
TELL ME MORE Warning: Lots, lots, lots of spoilers Melchior is from a small, most likely rural town in Germany where he excelled effortlessly in school though he felt a great deal of bitterness toward it and the church whose views he rejected and refused to attend. He witnessed harrassment and a clear bias against his best friend, Moritz Stiefel, who despite obsessive studying continued to fall behind (partially, he confided in Melchior, because he was also obsessively stressing over sexual thoughts and feelings that his conservative upbringing had left him completely unprepared to face or understand). Melchior, meanwhile, became the fantasy of several of the girls in town who admired his 19th century version of a bad boy attitude from afar, including one of his childhood friends, a girl named Wendla Bergmann. After an accidental meeting away from the strict eyes of the community, they began talking and Melchior became enamored with the girl and the surprisingly liberal ideas she harbored and was more than eager to share with this unattainable boy who approved of them. Moritz's hard work finally paid off when he passed his midterms, but a determination from his teachers not to let him advance to the next grade eventually lead him to fail his finals, which only confirmed Melchior's hatred for school and the society and principals that drove it, where they were being made into "a unified, military-like body where all that is weak must be hammered away". In the shadow of this event, Melchior and Wendla's secret encounters quickly took a darker turn. Wendla's innocent worldview was disturbed when she learned that one of her friends was being abused by her father. Wendla's obsession with this piece of information, and her ignorance of any sexual implications of that fascination or her request, lead her to convince Melchior to hit her with a switch because she'd realized that she'd "never felt ... anything". The incident escalated until Melchior lost his temper in the face of her taunting and threw her to the ground -- realizing what he'd done he froze, horrified, before fleeing. Days later Wendla found Melchior again, hiding in his family's hayloft, and he refused to converse with her despite her mention that Moritz had gone missing. She insisted on apologizing for their last meeting and refused his arguments that the fault was his. The unresolved tension between them once again escalated and this time ended in them having sex. In the meantime Moritz's family saw his failure at school as as good as failure at life and overcome by his sense of worthlessness, he committed suicide. Hoping to cover up any blame that might be put on them for Moritz's depression, the school pinned the blame on Melchior for corrupting the boy with the "atheistic" and "obscene" information -- specifically, an essay on sex that Moritz, who couldn't handle such discussions face-to-face, insisted that Melchior write. After trying to defend himself to deaf ears, Melchior frustratingly admitted that he wrote the essay and accepted his expulsion. Unknown to Melchior, Wendla had grown ill and a doctor's visit revealed her to be pregnant. Wendla caved under her mother's demands and gave up Melchior's name as the father. Melchior's parents were informed and, not sharing this information with Melchior, they chose to send him off to a reformatory school where he was teased and abused by the other delinquent boys. There he received a letter from Wendla where she claimed to have "written so many but heard nothing back" and in it he learned of her pregnancy and so successfully attempted to escape from the reformatory and return home. He got a letter to Wendla's friends asking that they bring Wendla to meet him in the graveyard behind the church, but when he arrived there he was alone. He stumbled upon a fresh grave for Wendla Bergmann where the gravestone claimed she "died of anemia". Devastated, Melchior tried to commit suicide but was confronted by the voices of Moritz and Wendla, whether real or imagined, and instead resolved to live and went back on the run with an unknown destination. INVENTORY 1) A copy of Goethe's Faust 2) A journal 3) A razor 4) An encyclopedia 5) Tobacco and paper with which to roll cigarettes 6) Wendla's letter to him in the reformatory school 7) An ash tray 8) A set of nice china 9) A matchbook 10) His jacket |
